What is the motivation behind OBD?

 A system in the engine’s on-board computer that monitors the performance of almost every emission-related components for malfunctions.  OBD systems help in this area by monitoring the performance of major engine components for any system failures that could result in increased emissions. One of the biggest reasons for developing OBD was to help reduce vehicle emissions.   In 1968  The first OBD computer system with scanning capability was introduced by Volkswagen. The first digital OBD system  introduces  by General Motors  on their 1980 Eldorado and Seville models. OBD is the standard convention utilized across most light-obligation vehicles to recover vehicle indicative data. Data is produced by motor control units (ECUs or motor control modules) inside a vehicle. They resemble the vehicle's cerebrum or PCs.
